Bartenders Elevating the Dining Experience

Father (Wayne) and Son Bartenders

In the world of hospitality, bartenders and mixologists hold a special place, infusing creativity, expertise, and flair into every drink they serve. From ancient civilizations to modern-day cocktail lounges, bartending has evolved into a respected profession, with skilled artisans crafting unique libations that tantalize the taste buds and delight the senses. Join us as we raise a glass to these mixology masters and celebrate their invaluable contributions to the food and beverage industry.

The art of bartending, a practice traced back to ancient civilizations, has a rich and storied history. In those times, skilled artisans would blend wines, herbs, and other ingredients to create flavorful concoctions. This early form of bartending laid the foundation for what would evolve into a sophisticated craft over the centuries. Techniques and recipes were passed down through generations, creating unique and innovative drinks that continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

The Bartenders Spirits Awards states that while ‘mixologist' and 'bartender' are often used interchangeably, each role brings unique skills and responsibilities. Mixology, for instance, is the study of cocktails, requiring specialized knowledge of the molecular properties of ingredients and the art of combining them to create balanced and flavorful drinks. On the other hand, Bartending encompasses a broader range of skills, including customer service, drink preparation, and bar management. Bartenders serve drinks and act as ambassadors for the establishment, curating unforgettable guest experiences.

Bartending is a respected and fun occupation in a healthy environment that builds a hub for the community. More than just mixing drinks, bartenders play a vital role in shaping the dining experience. Their warm hospitality, engaging personality, and attention to detail transform a simple night out into a memorable occasion. Whether crafting a classic cocktail or a custom creation, bartenders have a knack for connecting with guests, making them feel welcome and valued.

We must recognize bartenders' hard work and dedication, so we celebrate Bartender Appreciation Day every first Friday in December.

Here is a bartender Fun fact: When to shake vs. stir a cocktail?

·         Shaking is a technique used to mix ingredients together and chill them quickly.

·         Stirring is a technique used to mix ingredients together without incorporating air

Did you know bartenders and bar owners are crucial to the vibrant nighttime economy? Just what is the Nighttime Economy?  It encompasses diverse businesses and services catering to people's needs and desires outside of traditional working hours. Additionally, the night economy generates employment opportunities and supports various industries. According to the World Economic Forum in a recent article, “Rethinking 24-hour cities: night-time strategies to address urban challenges and thrive”, the night-time economy brings billions of dollars annually to cities and creates millions of jobs. New York City's value tops $35.1 billion annually and supports 300,000 jobs.

As board members of the Responsible Hospitality Institute, we assist communities in planning and managing hospitality zones, creating safe, vibrant, and economically prosperous places where people can socialize responsibly.

Adding a personal touch is essential. Let me introduce you to Wayne, my favorite bartender at the Redz Hotel bar at the Doubletree Hotel, in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. Our relationship with Redz extends beyond being regular patrons. It’s about a great place with incredible food (based on Wayne’s recommendations), but most importantly, it's about Wayne and his genuine interest in our conversations. His quirky customer service, warm welcome, and genuine representation of the hotel have made us loyal customers.

When I asked Wayne to share his thoughts on wrapping up this blog, he enlightened me. He spoke of how the traditions of mixology have evolved and how bartenders like him are at the front line, shaping authentic customer service and creating memorable experiences.
